Rate cards are asks
The short answer
Direct billboard quotes are opening positions, not clearing prices. The published evidence that clearing prices float: Blip's own data shows a $0.01/play auction floor against a $3,953 national average traditional lease Blip Billboards 2026, and AdQuick's bands span 5x within one format AdQuick 2026. No neutral body publishes an average discount percentage, so we quote none; the levers below are the mechanism.
The levers, strongest first
- Unsold loops near flight start: an empty digital slot earns the owner zero forever; the closer to start date, the softer the ask. Trade certainty for price.
- Seasonality: Q1 and post-holiday windows carry unsold inventory in most markets; the same unit quoted in January and September is two different negotiations.
- Multi-unit and multi-flight commitments: owners price repeatable revenue; a 3-flight annual commitment is the classic ask-softener, especially with territory reps (Lamar's structure).
- Competing quotes made visible: two owners, one brief; each knowing the other exists is half the work (when you need both).
- Programmatic as the alternative: much owner inventory lists on SSPs; a live second price on the same glass disciplines the direct ask (route math).
Scripts that keep the relationship
- "Our board reference is the published $5-$18 band; walk me from your quote to that band." Anchors without insulting AdQuick 2026.
- "What does this unit's price look like if we commit to three flights this year?" Invites the discount instead of demanding it.
- "If the loop is unsold the week before start, call me." Leaves a standing bid, costs nothing.
When the quote is actually firm
Spectaculars and landmark units, sold-out commuter corridors, and category-exclusive venue deals: scarcity is real there and the ask barely moves (spectaculars). Self-serve auction floors are also non-negotiable by design; the auction is the negotiation Blip Billboards 2026. Put the final numbers into the deck with the quote date attached; a negotiated rate is still a range with a timestamp. Reference bands: rate board.
